Founded by Todd Newman, whose path from waiter to vintner has always been driven by passion and perseverance, this is wine built on truth, not pretense.

The “17th poet” is me, it’s about the beginning and the end of this journey. My daughter Will have graduated high school at the end of the 17th vintage. It marks my journey before she was born at Dakota Shy Wine, to my evolution after. It celebrates the lessons yet to be learned inspires what’s to come and is an away a letter to my daughter that reads much like a story that many of us have or will write someday Each vintage release is written as a letter, a lesson, that carries forward the voices of poets and philosophers who shaped humanity. 17 Poets is a reflection preserved for her, and shared with you.

Our Founder

Wine entrepreneur Todd Newman is not a generational heir, he is a self-made vintner who built his first winery from the ground up. Now in his very personal and latest venture, he has done what few in Napa and wine + spirits industry have done. That resilience is bottled in 17 Poets: proof that luxury comes from perseverance, not always pedigree.

Each year, Todd pens a release letter: a modern lesson woven from poetry, philosophy, and lived truth. These are fragments of human experience, written for his daughter and extended to his community. With 17 Poets, the story is inseparable from the wine, making every vintage a chapter in a larger human narrative.

A passion project he has long want to pursue, was finally realized through a confluence of events leading him to this next venture in the world of luxury wine.

It’s raw truth, unwavering commitment, and unapologetic pursuit to not adhere to was before, and only to what is now and will be then.
